Classes taught for Scribing
- A Brief Introduction to Illumination – taught in- person at both the Canton of Buckston-on-Eno and Canton of Elvagast (2019) as well as at Pennsic 28. Each lecture was followed by a hands-on painting session, the canton members created note cards that were presented to two different reigning queens, and the Pennsic classes (one adult and one youth-specific) created personal bookmarks to take with them.
- Chasing Down Exemplars Online & Finding Alternate Sources – taught via Zoom as a guest lecturer- 2020, 2022. I will be trying this in person at Pennsic 49….not sure if the virtual will translate well, but I will have handouts. Fingers crossed.
- I Want to Try Scribing, Now What? – taught in 2021 at University of Atlantia (Virtual) 2021, both UA 106 & 107.
- I Just Got My First Scroll Assignment, Now What? – taught in 2021 at University of Atlantia (Virtual) UA 107
- Keeping it Real – Squashed Bug & Shading – taught in 2021 at University of Atlantia (Virtual) UA 108 (this was initially meant to be live and followed by a second hour class of hands-on illumination…I have fingers crossed for 2022 Fall, but have taught this Spring 2022, again as a Virtual University , but we did do a “paint-along” and I had folks try a realistic pearl. I was thrilled at how well it worked (being virtual) and humbled by the talent of those attending, I will be teaching this in person at Pennsic 49 with a painting session after the history portion.
- Oil Lamps for Camp – based on the class taught by Master Bedwyr at Pennsic that I attended in 2022. I have shared and altered it some (I don’t have the tools he used for parts) and taught it at baronial, University of Atlantia and War of the Wings class sessions, most recently 2024
- Gold Work for Scribes – methods of applying gold to illuminations both period and modern and working within your budget. Hands-on workshop where participants can try out techniques and bring home supplies to use.
- Making Beeswax-infused Linen Covers for Vessels – While not strictly provable as “used in period”, there are numerous illuminations which suggest this type of cover, and one may argue that they are certainly more attractive than plastic wrap or tinfoil in camp or at an event, and are economical and reusable.
- Vinegar Infusions – Making a Shrub/Switchel/Sekanjabin – hands-on class taught alongside TRH Declan MacDochery (using vinegars created from his brewing). A discussion of herbs, remedies, medieval health recipes, and flavorings for meats and drink. Then turning the class loose to make and take their own personal recipe.
